Tartaros was the massive dome beneath the earth that was described as a stormy pit.

Important Relationships

He had many children with Gaia, including a race of giants that were born to overthrow the Gods, but didn’t win. They also had the storm giant Typhon who came very close to killing Zeus and overthrowing the Gods. He was described as a monstrous, fire breathing figure with snakes attached to him and a voice that was a mixture of all the worst sounds in the world. He was so terrifying that when the gods saw him come towards Olympus, they ran all the way to Egypt, changing into animals. Only Zeus stayed to fight, throwing lightning bolts at him, but when he got too close Typhon caught him and used Zeus’s own weapon to cut the tendons from his body, leaving Zeus unable to move and lots of pain. Typhon left him in a cave with his tendons hidden nearby and a monster as a guard, but Hermes (the god of Messengers) found him and managed to put his tendons back inside of him. As Zeus is a powerful, immortal god he healed quickly and now back at his full strength he chased Typhon in a flying chariot and managed to trap him under Mount Etna, which is now an active volcano.
